Sleep dep, vpn, and general lj config stuff

My sleep schedule has been growing gradually more and more out of whack. Waking up during the noon hour is not gonna do me a lot of good when it comes time to start a full time job. So, yesterday I decided I’d just stay up and crash out at a reasonable hour… The staying up part worked.

10pm rolled around and I hit the sack, but my mind was wandering to my neverending list of projects and I realized that I just felt generally gross, having been wearing the same clothes for three days straight… So, I decided to hit the shower and hey, WTF, I might as well just STAY UP ALL NIGHT… AGAIN!

Last night’s wee-hours project was OpenVPN, but I’m having some trouble with routing or something… The tunnel opens, and I get the IP assigned by the server, but traffic just doesn’t want to flow. I have decided not to touch anything with a # prompt until I’ve gotten a solid 8 hours, though, so that is on hold.

Its a pretty cool project, though. Here’s the concept… As I have upgraded my main computer, I’ve kept the “obsolete” hardware around and turned it into *nix boxen. With not a lot of room to myself, this meant I had a couple systems in my closet running 24/7. This made my room hot (especially the closet they were in) and noisy and I was just sick of it.

So, when wandering through office depot the other day, I came across a popular 802.11g access point and PCI card and I snagged ’em.

… hmm… the sky outside my window is growing increasingly bright as I write this…

[pause while I get some more diet coke and some cold pizza]

So, I dropped the PCI card into one of the systems (a p3, 600MHz that had been running fBSD) and did a Stage 1 Gentoo install, since I had looked around for some vpn docs and it seemed to have the bases covered… besides, I just wanted to check out Gentoo. Ran into some issues with the install, but I’ve posted some suggestions to the gentoo-wiki and as for the other issue… well, people are on their own if they, like me, discover that their livecd has no freaking device node for hdc…

But I digress…

So, I do the install, swap the new AP for my old 802.11b access point (speed is an issue, my file server is gonna be on this network) and I go out to Osh with mom to pick up a sturdy shelf unit with enough space between shelves to stick all my systems in.

I currently have a side network with two systems on it, routing over the wireless. I’m going to set up a VPN so I have smooth access to that network, over a secure connection (Sure, I’ve got WEP and MAC access controlls set on the AP, but I’ve seen what someone can do with a Whoppix livecd, a prism2 card, and about 10 minutes)… I have some … erm, sensitive data on that file server and I don’t want joe wardriver poking around in it…

So, that’s a work in progress…

I spent a lot of today… er, yesterday… browsing livejournal feeds, communities, interests, users… found lots of nifty pr0n and comic feeds (gonna have to catch up on my web comics now)… I’m also toying with friend groups and filters…

Well, I think I’m gonna call it a post…
