The Journal is back up! Well, I’m kinda in the process of bringing it up anyway, don’t expect regular updates… Next step is to go through some of my old posts that I want to strip out…

Gold’s Rules
Gold’s Rules…
… of Business
- Management is a classification of mammal whose purpose is to prevent you from doing your job
efficiently and make your life hell when they succeed (See also, Customers). - If you deceive your customers, when they eventually learn the truth you
will have done far more harm than if you had given them the real facts from
the start. - The low-profile, lower paid employees are often the very heart of the
business. They are the foundation upon which the entire operation sits. If
you do not support them, then everything will collapse! - Management is incapable of recognizing the worth of those they supervise.
… of Computing
- Look before you delete.
- If you do not know what something does, do not assume you don’t
need it. The exceptions to this rule are daemons which open up a port on
your computer. Kill ’em all! - If you think MS Windows operates according to some set of rules, you’re
fooling yourself. If you want to fix something, get yourself a Bill Gates
voodoo doll, and a bottle of Tequila. - If you think you’re typing more than you should have to in order to make
something work, you probably are. - Never install a Microsoft Beta.
… of Life
- One sign that you are becoming an adult is that you have questions that
your family honestly cannot answer. (Hey mom, how do I set up kernel modules
again?) - Paranoia may be inconvenient, and it may make you seem foolish, but
ironically it also prevents foolish mistakes. - Idiots keep life interesting. They just have a bad habit of not knowing
when life needs spicing up. - Proper use of synonyms is the key to diplomacy.
… of Education
- NEVER trust an Academic Counselor. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER!

I’ve been having a hell of a time sleeping lately… I only sleep for a few hours at a time, and its restless sleep… I have to force myself into it and to stay there.
I currently have that hot, drained, sweaty buzz of sleep deprivation… Dry, itchy eyes… Fun stuff.

Killed my UO account. As with most multi-player games, there is a constant stream of assholes out to ruin your fun… whether its jumping into your 1on1 fight vs an earth elemental without asking, and looting it of the 300 gold pieces before you get the chance, complaining about your choice of weapon (silver broadsword in the bone knight room?! go fight lichs you dick!), or taking advantage of your membership to the same guild to kill you and loot your body… It was fun for a time, and I was .2% from my first grandmastery, but it just wasn’t fun anymore.
Oh well, Caelyn O’Brien has retired before reaching his full potential… I suppose that’s the story of my life, actually.
No comic for a while… placeholder.

Tonight on JAG, a navy ship was hacked via a hole in their “email portals” (quote not by the cracker). I guess they run an old version of sendmail or something. 😉

So, I’m in talking to my dad and I notice roto-router is making some noise… so I check my logs and I see a stream of packet deny messages from a cnm addy. I hop into #ugf for the first time since the battle with james and gilli, to see who’s on that ip… I glance down the list and I whois didi, gilli, dalbert, and what’s this?! gn0me is on… heh, sure enough!
So I ask gn0me if he’s having fun portscanning me… he says no, not yet… I told him he was getting blocked and that I figured he got about as much info as he was going to get and he cut the scan off. I cat’ed the messages file, greped it for that ip, and output to a file… over 250k! damn, man!
So, I told him the ports that I have open, and the ports that he’d be able to hit through gte’s filters… he had to run, though.
That was somewhat entertaining… some nice clean fun.

Yeah, bind 9 was a real pain in the ass to install… Especially on a 486.

Less than 300 mp3s to go in my audit.
Bind 9 is a pain to install.

I’ve killed the links to the goldcam in the nav bar and on the main page. I never use it, and I don’t really plan to for a while.
The comic is in stasis, I’m waiting for things to calm down to the point that I know who and what I can draw appropriately.
A canadian named Bob has been in touch with me about Bobism. He’s spreading the word.
My surgery from a couple weeks back… well, I had all the stitches removed, but it’s been slightly infected. There’s a chance that this will cause it to end up right back where we started, and I’ll have to go to a plastic surgeon this time to have it done again… Fun, fun fun!
I’m re-reading “Assasin’s Apprentice“. Its a good series, go read it.
